William E. Welch '51

William E. Welch, 81, of Monroeville, died peacefully Sunday, Oct. 24, 2010, at home on after a long illness. He was born June 9, 1929, in Bangor, Maine, the son of the late William and Eleanor Welch. After graduating from the Maine Maritime Academy, he joined IBM and retired after 40 years of service. He loved golf, the Steelers, gardening, his family and was especially proud of his grandchildren, Kayla and Tony. Bill was preceded in death by his son, John K. Welch, in 1997; and his brother, James Welch. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Janet "Jackie" (Keenan) Welch; and his children, Karen (Bill) Rankin, of Oak Bluffs, Mass., William (Terri) Welch III, of Murrysville, Michael (Mary Giglio) Welch, of Dallas, Texas, and Barbara (Harry) Ostaffe, of Cranberry Township; his beloved grandchildren, Anthony Welch and Kayla Ostaffe; his brother, Michael; sister-in-law, Evelyn (Cos) Contento; and many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the GENE H. CORL INC. FUNERAL CHAPEL AND CREMATION CENTER OF MONROEVILLE, 4335 Northern Pike (one block East of Mosside Boulevard, Route 48). A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in North American Martyrs Church, 2526 Haymaker Road, Monroeville. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Society of St. Vincent DePaul, 1243 N. Franklin St, Pittsburgh, PA 15233, or Families of SMA, South Jersey/Delaware Chapter, P.O. Box 538, Medford, NJ 08055.
