Robert L. Riddle ’55, retired captain and director of fleet operations for Sea-Land Services, died in March 2010. At the request of his family, his remains were taken aboard the T/S State of Maine 2010 cruise. On Sunday, May 30, 2010, Captain Larry Wade ’64, Master of the T/S State of Maine, the ship’s crew, and midshipmen held a committal service at 1300 hours local time. Wade wrote: “The weather was blustery and cold but from all descriptions I have heard of Captain Riddle, I am sure he would have approved. It was truly a ‘Seaman’s Day.’” Wade made an entry in the Vessel Official Log. A moment of silence was observed followed by a salute by the Assistant Commandant. Copies of all documents prepared, as well as the flag used in the ceremony, were retained and returned to Captain Riddle’s wife, Jan.
He is also survived by five children and his former wife, Elizabeth.
