Maurice “Mike” May ’43- 2 died January 16, 2010 in Standardsville, Virginia. After graduation from the Academy, he served in the Merchant Marine for the duration of WWII as a second mate and then first mate on Liberty ships in the North Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea. During the Korean Conflict, he joined the Navy as a lieutenant. After his service, he worked as a marine information specialist for the U.S. Hydrographic/ Oceanographic Department in Suitland, Maryland. He continued working for the Navy in naval intelligence until his retirement from the Defense Mapping Agency in 1982.
He began running every day at age 45 and it soon became a major part of his life. In 1971 and 1974, he finished a 50 mile hike/ eight bells run within the 20 hour limit and received a gold medal each time from the Alonzo Stagg Physical Foundation of California. When he couldn’t run any longer, he jogged; when he couldn’t jog any more, he walked; when he couldn’t walk, he struggled, with help, to go outside and down the driveway. He reluctantly accepted his limitations but never stopped talking about running.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Flora, and a son and daughter as well as many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and two great, great grandsons.
