David B. Letteney '53

David B. Letteney, passed away peacefully Sunday, Jan. 23, 2011, at the age of 79. He was born in Melrose, Mass. and attended schools in that city and in Rumford, Maine, where his family lived during World War II. He graduated from the Maine Maritime Academy, Castine, Maine in 1953 with a Bachelor of Marine Science degree. He sailed as second and third officer on cargo and passenger ships and also served in the U.S. Navy from 1954 to 1956. In 1959, he graduated from the Wharton School of Finance and Commerce with an MBA in Transportation and Public Utilities. He worked in terminal and container operations for Grace Line in New York and in 1970, joined Farrell Lines to assist in planning their container services. When he left Farrell Lines in 1981, he was vice president of Intermodal Operations. He became chairman of the Trans Atlantic American Flag Liner Operations and executive secretary of the Steamship Operators Intermodal Committee, positions he held until his retirement in 1999. During retirement, he was an active member of the Society of Maritime Arbitrators and participated in numerous arbitration cases with the American Arbitration Association and the National Association of Securities Dealers. He also wrote a monthly column on intermodalism for "WWS/Worldwide Shipping," a magazine devoted to the maritime industry.

He was predeceased by a brother, Kim, and Margaret "Peg" his wife of 19 years. He is survived by a daughter, Jessica of Vancouver, Wash.; a son, David of Portland, Ore.; his sister, Barbara Egan of Hudson, Mass.; a sister-in-law, Jane of Framingham, Mass.; a brother-in-law, Thomas Mahan of Forked River, as well as his first wife, Nancy Silver of Princeton. Also surviving are stepdaughters, Kerry Gassert of Rumson, and Meg Englehorn of Keystone Heights, Fla.; a stepson, Thomas Gray of Baltimore, Md.; and six grandchildren, Caitin, Danielle, Harrison, Tommy, John, and Trey.

Dave and Peg's ashes will be scattered at sea during a memorial service conducted aboard the "State of Maine," Maine Maritime Academy's training ship.

A great conversationalist and an avid reader, David will be remembered as a caring father, brother, and friend, a loving husband, and a warm and much-loved grandfather. His family and his friends will miss him dearly.
