Douglas G. Howlett '79

Douglas G. Howlett ’79, Master and First Class Pilot, died July 17, 2010 in Gilchrist, Maryland. The son of a captain, Howlett moved his way up from third mate to captain, master, and first class pilot after graduation. At 23, he was accepted into the Association of Maryland Pilots, and received advanced training at the Maritime Institute of Technology and Graduate Studies. He served almost 30 years guiding nearly 3,200 ships up and down the Chesapeake Bay from Cape Henry, Virginia to Baltimore, and through the C and D Canal. Lawrence Wade ’64 noted that Howlett “piloted the State of Maine many times and was a great man.” He loved being outdoors, fishing, golfing, scuba diving, and was a voracious reader, especially of history books. He is survived by his mother, sister, and a nephew. The Association of Maryland Pilots and Doug’s fellow alumni therein would like to express their deepest regrets on the loss of their partner and friend. Doug epitomized what it means to be an MMA graduate and will be truly missed by all.
