Richard Edward Brennan '47

Richard E. Brennan ’47, called “Mike” by his classmates, died April 30, 2010, in Kentwood, Louisiana. After graduating from MMA, a school with a long history of Brennan family involvement, he spent two years in the U.S. Navy and then a year at St. Michael’s College (Vermont), before transferring to Amherst College from which he received his degree in 1954. While at Amherst, he was a standout football player on the team that beat Williams College in his senior year. Facing him in that game was his brother Jack, 5 years his junior. He went on to a successful career in publishing and business education, working first as an editor for Addison-Wesley and then as vice president of Rand McNally. For many years, he worked for the National Education Corp. as head of the Bryman School in Massachusetts. In the early 1980s, he and his wife retired to Kentwood, Louisiana. His two older brothers – Robert A. Brennan ’44 (deceased) and William F. Brennan ’43-2- attended the Academy.  William F. Brennan (Captain) returned to MMA to serve as Commandant of Midshipmen; and his nephew, William J. Brennan (PhD) is now serving as President of the Academy.  He is survived by his wife, Ara, and their two daughters.
