Glenn Richard Benson, 47, of Dover Foxcroft, passed away Monday, Aug. 30, 2010. He was aboard the M/V Freedom, the ship he was employed on as chief engineer, in the Red Sea en route to Jordan. The cause of death has yet to be determined.
Glenn was born on Dec. 22, 1962, in Augusta, to Richard and Judith Benson. He is survived by his maternal grandmother, Aileen Murray of Norridgewock; his mother, Judy of Skowhegan; two siblings, Todd Benson of Skowhegan and Lauren Taylor of St. Albans; several nieces and nephews in Skowhegan, St. Albans and Norridgewock; his wife Susan; his four children and a grandson, all residing in Dover-Foxcroft.
Glenn graduated from Maine Maritime Academy in 1985 and had since accomplished the highest level of achievement in his field as chief engineer. He took great pride in his job and was well known and liked throughout the fleet for his excellence as an engineer, both on the job and with everyone he dealt with on a personal basis.
He was married to Susan Wynne Stanley on Sept. 18, 1993, and became a proud father of Spencer and Stetson Bowden. A daughter, Delaney, was born to him in 1994, and a son, Cameron, in 1995. Glenn was made a grandfather by Spencer and his wife to Shane Bowden, born Jan. 5, 2010.
Glenn was known for his generosity, his quick wit, and his ability to make everyone laugh. He was an avid sports fan and had a passion for hunting and fishing. He enjoyed the simple things in life and had recently given his heart to God, but his world revolved around his wife and children above all else. He will be remembered and honored for this devotion.
There will be an informal service held outside in Dover-Foxcroft.
The date and time will be announced at a later date. For that information, please e-mail Susan at bfamilyx6@yahoo.com or call 564-0904.
